Understanding Vitamin D3 and K2

Vitamin D3 and vitamin K2 are different nutrients with different roles in the body. They are frequently combined in nutritional supplements, but consumers should still evaluate the formulation, dosage and intended use rather than assuming that every D3 + K2 product is identical.

What is vitamin D3?

Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is a form of vitamin D. Vitamin D contributes to normal calcium absorption and is involved in normal bone and muscle function and normal immune system function.

What is vitamin K2?

Vitamin K2 refers to forms of vitamin K, including menaquinones. Vitamin K contributes to normal blood clotting and maintenance of normal bones.

Why are D3 and K2 often combined?

Both nutrients are associated with normal bone-related functions, so manufacturers often formulate them together. However, the fact that two nutrients are combined does not mean that every product has the same formulation, dosage or suitability for every person.

What should you check on the label?

A responsible approach

Supplements should complement a balanced diet and should not be presented as a replacement for medical diagnosis or treatment. People taking medicines that affect blood clotting, or people with specific medical conditions, should seek professional advice before using vitamin K-containing supplements.
